Wyndham council is planting 8000 trees across the municipality, as part of its annual planting season.

Environment and sustainability portfolio holder, Cr Heather Marcus, said residents might have noticed that the council had been planting trees on nature strips since April this year.

She said the planting would continue until August.

“Planting in the cool, wetter months gives the trees the best chance of survival,” Cr Marcus said.

“Last year residents let us know what nature strips needed tree coverage for the 2020 tree planting season, and later this year we will be in touch about the 2021 tree planting season.

“We are planting trees across the municipality to provide shade near our houses and streets; to cool our streets on summer days; to protect us against the wind; to reduce stormwater runoff and absorb pollution; to create habitat for our local wildlife, and to improve the look of our roads and streets.”

Cr Marcus said that Wyndham’s tree planting program was one of the largest across metropolitan Melbourne, after recent research revealed the area has a lower tree cover than most other municipalities.

“We want to see Wyndham not only be on par with other councils but lead the way to provide a greener and healthier environment for our residents,” Cr Marcus said.

“Council aims to have a tree in the nature strip of each household in Wyndham by 2040, in order to achieve our canopy cover targets and make Wyndham an even more beautiful place to live”.
