Thinking green is top of the agenda at Truganina South Primary School.

The school has been recognised for its dedication to the environment at the state government’s ResourceSmart Schools Sustainability Program annual awards, which were held earlier this month.

The school’s science and sustainability teacher Vanessa Smith received the Primary Teacher of the Year award, while pupils from the school’s Green Team were named the Student Action Team of the Year.

Ms Smith and her pupils have taken part in several environmental events including last year’s War On Waste March, Kids Teaching Kids conferences, National Tree Day, Clean Up Australia Day and many school-wide sustainability competitions and initiatives.

Ms Smith has also forged community partnerships with City West Water, Werribee River Association, CERES Environment Park, Werribee Zoo and Wyndham council to provide incursions and educational opportunities for students.

Ms Smith said she was thrilled to be announced as the ResourceSmart Primary Teacher of the Year.

“I’m so happy that all the work we do here is being recognised, the kids are amazing and it’s been wonderful to have the opportunity to lead them in their sustainability journey,” she said.
