Folks from near and far are encouraged to come and make use of The Little River Mechanics Institute Hall.
Groups and organisations can hire out the multipurpose facility for meetings, training courses, fundraising events, weddings and funerals– among other things.
The hall houses one of only 11 mechanics institute libraries left in Victoria and has been run by volunteers since 1911.
Among the amenities that groups may find of use are a well-equipped kitchen, recently installed stage lighting and an upgraded men’s restroom.
Like any venue, it can be a matter of using it or losing it, says volunteer Les Sanderson.
“Our primary reason for more use is to help cover our costs to run the facility. As you could understand, our insurance costs are high,” he said.
“We are attempting to raise funds so we can do some maintenance, primarily heating and cooling, and the floors are in need of re-stumping.
“Our major role in the community is to provide a meeting place where people can gather to celebrate family moments and achievements, and to enjoy community engagement.”
While the hall does receive subsidies from Wyndham council to operate, Mr Sanderson said the only way it will continue to survive is through usage alone.
“Running and maintenance costs are funded by our community management committee who work tirelessly to maintain this 115-year-old facility.
“We do get a small community subsidy [from council], which by no means covers anywhere near our running costs.”
