Werribee police are concerned by the number of drivers still getting behind the wheel after a few drinks.
During Operation Speakeasy last weekend, a blitz cracking down on drink driving, officers pulled over 28 drivers for 34 offences.
Senior Sergeant Peter West said the operation involved mobile patrols targeting people leaving licensed venues.
He said some of the breathalyser readings were alarming, with one driver blowing 0.172.
“We will continue to run this operation,” Senior Sergeant West said. “It’s just ridiculous the amount of drink drivers on the roads.
“It’s simple. Don’t drink and drive.
“It’s up to drivers to show a bit of responsibility.”
Meanwhile, as the state looks forward to a long weekend for the AFL grand final, police are warning they will be out in full force for a statewide weekend-long roads blitz.
Operation Scoreboard will run from midnight on Thursday night until Sunday, using a significant police presence on the roads to deter drivers from doing the wrong thing.
Westgate Highway Patrol’s sergeant Trevor Poulton said full highway patrol and station resources would be out on the road for the three-day operation.
“We will have a higher presence than usual on the roads,” he said.
“We’ll be keeping an eye out for all speed and safety offences, distracted driving, drugs and alcohol.”
During last year’s grand final weekend, more drivers were nabbed on Wyndham roads than any other suburb in the west, with 80 drivers issued infringement notices.
Brimbank had 56 offences, Melton 27, Maribyrnong 28 and Hobsons Bay 16.
Sergeant Poulton said he is hopeful that it won’t be the same case this year.
“We would ask that everyone drive with a bit of care and caution,” he said.
“It’s better that drivers arrive a few minutes later than not arrive at all.”
