Two Wyndham schools have been recognised for their environmental credentials.

Werribee Primary School and Warringa Park School in Hoppers Crossing each took out gongs at the ResourceSmart Schools Awards, held by Sustainability Victoria.

Werribee Primary was named the state’s best energy-smart primary school and Warringa Park was named the water school of the year.

Werribee Primary was also a finalist in the three other categories of this year’s awards –Leadership School of the Year, Waste School of the Year and Water School of the Year.

Teacher and sustainability co-ordinator Jo-anne Wembridge said staff, students and parents were “very excited” by the award.

“Werribee Primary School provides students with real-life opportunities to build on the knowledge and skills required to live sustainable lives,” she said.

As part of that, students keep an Energy Frog Journal to inspire energy saving at home and take part in monthly ‘Out with Lights’ days, where they aim to not use electricity or gas.

The school installed a solar panel system after receiving a grant from Wyndham council in 2015 and this year was awarded GOLD Ride2School status through Bicycle Network.

Ms Wembridge said the school also promoted sustainable transport through
the Walk to School program and installed active paths specifically for the school.
