The community is being invited to walk, run, jump or dance into this year’s Wyndham Healthy and Active Expo.

The Wyndham council initiative will run from Saturday, September 22, to Sunday, October 14, with more than 80 free come-and-try sessions.

Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard said the expo would give residents opportunities to try something new and improve their health, fitness and wellbeing.

“While we know that exercising is important for our physical and mental health, many of us aren’t getting enough exercise each week,” Cr Maynard said.

“The Healthy and Active Expo is a great way to find a new sport or fitness class that feels right for you, in a fun, social environment.

“In this year’s program, there are classes for all ages, interests and abilities, from low-impact activities like lawn bowls, pilates and yoga to high-energy fun with Zumba, bootcamp and even martial arts.”

Cr Maynard said the expo would showcase walking groups, with a focus on mental wellbeing, and team sports, with opportunities for children to try athletics, dance, acrobatics, gymnastics, netball and cricket.

“Research tells us that many Victorian women put off exercise because of a fear of being judged or not being fit enough to start,” he said. “So this year’s program includes a range of activities designed to help women and young girls stay active, including ultimate frisbee women-only fitness classes,” he said.
