A compactor garbage truck has burst into flames on the Princes Freeway has brought traffic to a standstill.

Only one lane on the Freeway Melbourne-bound before the Duncans Road exit, Werribee roads are also in gridlock as motorists try to get off the freeway.

Werribee Fire Brigade first lieutenant Darryl Wells said the brigade got the call-out at around 5.30am.

“It was a truck filled with cardboard, and the whole cabin has just caught fire,” he said.

“The cabin couldn’t dump the load, so it’s very hard to get to the cardboard that’s on fire to extinguish it.

“There’s about four CFA appliances out there right now fighting the blaze, with support from Corio and Little River.”

Mr Wells said the driver of the truck is safe.
