June 1, 1977

Three firemen threatened with deregristration by their union have been promised full support by the State Government. The three men, all members of the United Fire Fighters Union, have been told unless they stop working as volunteers at Werribee they will be deregistered.

A Hoppers Crossing boy, who was soon to play his 50th game of football, is believed drowned in a boating accident which killed his father on Saturday. While his Hoppers Crossing Junior Football team mates were playing football on Sunday police were searching Lake Martin, near Colac, for the body of 12-year-old Damien Yacono who had been duck shooting with his father Vincent Yacono jnr, 35.

Wyndham Council will take CSR Ltd, which is planning a prescribed waste dump for Wyndham, to the Supreme Court over a land-use agreement covering the site. The council will seek legal action to help it secure the land for a general purpose tip.

Hoppers Crossing father Anil Singh Hanse hopes a memorial he will attend in Canada this Saturday will close a dark chapter of his life. Mr Hanse and other relatives of the 329 passengers and crew killed in the mid-air bombing of Air Flight India 182 on June 23, 1985, will honour the victims at a service at a new memorial, funded by the Canadian Government.
