Truganina South Primary School pupils gained an insight into the agricultural industry when they visited a Werribee South farm this week.

The pupils learned about produce, minimising waste, sustainability and healthy eating during the excursion to Velisha Farms on Tuesday.

The school visit was organised under the Victorian Farmers Federation’s (VFF) Kids to Ag program, which encourages primary schools, primary production sites and farmers across the state to help educate primary school pupils about agriculture by accessing grants of up to $2000.

This project is supported by the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment, through funding from the federal government’s Educating Kids About Agriculture initiative.

Kids to Ag aims to increase primary school pupils’ understanding of where their food and fibre comes from, and to raise awareness of the career opportunities within the agriculture sector.

VFF vice-president and Werribee South egg farmer Danyel Cucinotta said allowing children to explore the world of “ag“ opened the opportunity for further discussions at home of where their food comes from.

“The opportunity for us farmers and the entire agriculture industry to showcase the work that goes into producing our world-class food and fibre will hopefully inspire the next generation of Victorian farmers,“ Mrs Cucinotta said.

“Nothing beats real life experience and this program allows children to go out on the farm and enjoy a hands on lesson about ag.”
