It was impossible to tell staff and students apart at Suzanne Cory High School last Wednesday – at first glance – as teachers donned school dresses to campaign for education for girls in Sierra Leone.

Participating in the Do it in a Dress campaign raised funds to send the African students, with the school, staff and students collecting more than $1200 for the cause.

SCHS teacher Dolly Nguyen said she was impressed with response to the campaign in its first year at the school.

“We are a public, selective entry school, so staff and students know the importance of good education,” she said.

“When we heard that a girl in Sierra Leone is more likely to be sexually assaulted than go to high school, we wanted to make a difference in any way we could.

“This is our way to give back and help to educate girls who might not otherwise have a chance to go to school.”

Organisers say that 28 per cent of females in Sierra Leone will be married before the age of 15, only one in six attend school, and one in eight die during childbirth.
