It takes a brave person to drive an old Ford on a 2500-kilometre mystery route through the Australian wilderness in the name of charity.
That’s what friends Tim Fuller and Barry Cox, from the Rotary Club of Laverton Point Cook, will be doing when they embark on the Mystery Box Car Rally next month.
The pair will drive a 1988 Ford – nicknamed The Ambassador – to raise money for the Cancer Council.
The rally, to be held between November 25 and 29, requires entrants to drive vehicles that are at least 25 years old. This year’s event will start in Dubbo and participants will be told of their route each morning before hitting the road.
Mr Cox, of Hoppers Crossing, lost his wife Tammy, 39, to ovarian cancer last year.
He described Tammy – the mother of their children Caitlin and Daniel – as “an incredible woman” who was passionate and caring”.
“She was an inspiration to me from the moment we met, and I will always cherish our time together,” he said.
Mr Cox said his wife would be excited and proud that he was embarking on the Mystery Box Rally.
He and Mr Fuller are planning on dressing up themselves and their car in different themes each day of the rally.
Mr Fuller said he and Mr Cox would like to thank the Hopper Crossing businesses that had donated time and spare parts to prepare their car for its mystery trek, including BBL Automotive Repairs, Burson Auto Parts and Road Star Tyres.
Mystery Box participants must raise $3000 in order to drive in the rally. So far, Mr Cox and Mr Fuller have raised $2320.
