Fresh food $150m jobs boost for Truganina

A $150 million Woolworths meat processing plant that will create hundreds of jobs will open in Truganina in August.

Woolworths is advertising a range of positions at the plant, which is on Dohertys Road and scheduled to open in August.

The supermarket chain also plans to spend $150 million to open at least 20 new stores and refurbish 40 existing stores across Victoria in the next three years.

Woolworths would not disclose whether any of those stores would be in the Wyndham area.

The company has also announced it will shed about 680 full-time, part-time and casual staff when its Broadmeadows distribution centre closes in 2018 and is replaced by a new state-of-the-art grocery distribution centre in south-east Melbourne.

A Woolworths spokeswoman was unable to confirm how many of the 340 full-time staff employed at Broadmeadows would keep their jobs, but in a statement released last week the company said the new meat processing plant and distribution centre would support more than 510 full-time jobs.

Woolworths’ supermarket operations director Pat McEntee said the meat processing centre would improve the company’s fresh meat offering at all its Victorian stores.

“Our customers can expect to see more consistent, better-quality meat [and] enhanced availability on our shelves as well as new
and seasonal ranges,” Mr McEntee said.

“This change to our fresh meat supply  will also see changes in our stores in coming weeks.

“We will be building more butcher shops and our qualified butchers will be on hand to cut meat specifically to suit the customers’ preference and give advice on preparation and cooking.”

Wyndham councillor and economic development portfolio holder Intaj Khan welcomed the new facility. “This will create a lot more jobs for the area,” he said.
