Werribee restaurant Truck Stop Deluxe fed hundreds of people when they offered free meals to residents doing it tough in the COVID-19 pandemic, at a recent event.
Venue manager Mark ‘Bubby’ Luxford said around eight staff members donated their time to help at the Tuesday event, even though many of them have lost work hours themselves due to pandemic restrictions.
Mr Luxford said that during the two-hour session, Truck Stop Deluxe served around 256 meals, consisting of a burger and chips.
“People were really, really thankful, they were saying it was a great night, had a really made their day and given them something to look forward to, for a couple of days beforehand,” he said.
“One person messaged us and said they did not have enough petrol to drive down with their three children, so we delivered to them.”
Some market gardeners from Werribee South also visited to mention they would be happy to donate some produce if Truck Stop Deluxe hosts a similar event in the future.
Mr Luxford that Truck Stop Deluxe felt fortunate for the customers who have continued to order takeaway meals during lockdown.
He said the business was also grateful for the support of Wyndham council during the pandemic.
“I would like to encourage people to shop locally and support local businesses and cafes,” he said.
Mr Luxford said that if anyone was struggling after losing a job due to COVID-19, they could message Truck Stop Deluxe on social media, as the restaurant tries to help people out with meals when it can.
