For a good cause

When 15-year-old Asheriya began raising money for breast cancer awareness, she thought $500 was an achievable goal.

Within a day her Gofundme page had already reached $1000 and Asheriya said she was “pretty proud” of the achievement.

“I had to increase it. I raised $4000 in about a month,” Asheriya said.

“I got donations from my friends, my family, from the Thomas Carr community, and I also got a lot of donations from overseas.”

To further support people suffering from cancer, the Wyndham resident also made the decision to donate her hair.

“I cut my hair after a family member got diagnosed with breast cancer last year,” she said.

“I was a bit nervous, but I knew my hair would go to a good cause because I was donating it to the variety children’s charity…so I was happy that it was going to help somebody.”

Asheriya said her family and friends were really happy about her fundraising success.

“It brought up a lot of memories for them and they just thought it was recognizing what our family has been through. They’re all pretty happy and emotional about it at the same time,” she said.

Asheriya hopes the community continues to support people who are affected by cancer by donating to fundraising services.

“I think if we can find a cure now, then in the future so many people won’t be affected by it,” she said.
