Two Werribee girls are following in their family footsteps with their love of footy, inspired by the launch of the AFL women’s league.
Evie and Ruby, 12 and seven, have loved footy and the Western Bulldogs for most of their lives, but seeing women play has been extra special for them.
“Our nan has followed the Dogs for 60 years and our mum for 40 years,” Ruby said.
On the day Evie was born, her grandfather registered her as a Bulldog pup.
She’s been watching games since she was a baby in a pram, and last year, the girls even got to go to the AFL grand final.
“I love to see the girls play,” Ruby said. “The majority of games we have seen have been at the Whitten Oval and we love it there.
“I know some of the players and it is very exciting to watch them play.”
Both girls idolise Tiarna Ernst and proudly wear her number, 19, on the back of their jumpers.
The sisters, who play footy together and with their dad, are looking forward to the day when they will line up for a team of their own.
“We love it – it is great to see the girls get the same opportunity as the men,” Ruby said.
