Students from Carranballac College were given an insight into the lives of Olympic and Paralympic athletes as part of an educational program run by the Victorian Institute of Sport.
College year 8 student Lauren, an avid basketballer and football player, said she enjoyed hearing from the dieticians who work with Victoria’s elite athletes.
“Frankly I think the VIS presenter did a fantastic job at explaining everything,” she said.
“The Nutrition Advancement session not only educated me but motivated me.
“I had an idea that nutrition played a part but I feel so confident now that I know what foods to eat.”
Carranballac Health and PE teacher, Danielle Speranza, said that the VIS series was a great experience for the students who were selected to participate in the program.
“The selected students benefitted immensely from being extended, this gave them an opportunity to further their knowledge and learning how it can be applied to an athlete’s program,” Ms Speranza said.
The VIS Sport Advancement Series is supported by the state government as part of the Department of Education and Training’s Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series.
Program co-ordinator Cathryn Pruscino said she has been overwhelmed by the interest schools have shown in the series.
“Victorian teachers have jumped at the opportunity to engage their students in these specialised sessions, extending their understanding of nutrition and sport science and how they relate to health, wellbeing, exercise and performance,” Ms Pruscino said.
The VIS sessions are free for students at government schools. Teachers can book sessions at vis.org.au/vis-advancement-series-
