Fond farewell to Lilian Flynn

Hundreds of people packed into St Andrews Parish on Friday afternoon to farewell 96-year-old Lilian Flynn.

The Werribee resident of more than 60 years, and mother of five sons, passed away two weeks ago.

In a heartfelt eulogy, Lilian’s son Michael Flynn spoke of a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who had a great sense of humour.

“At the age of 16, she met this striking young man Maurice Flynn. She was impressed that he owned a dog and liked his horsemanship too,” Michael said.

After marriage, they lived in Collingwood and Mentone, and moved to Werribee South in 1942.

After moving through a number of rental properties, the Flynns, along with their five sons, moved into a weatherboard property owned by Maurice’s employer, the Silk brothers.

“Mum worked hard to make it her own,” Michael said. “For mum, cleanliness was next to Godliness. Our parents considered themselves blessed because they had a home provided through employment, cows for milk, chickens for eggs, and room to grow vegies.”

In her later years, she became a resident at the Wyndham Lodge nursing home.
