The man behind a planned development in Tarneit says he wants his site to be the home of Wyndham’s new Indian Cultural Precinct.
Sunil Kumar is the owner-developer of Tarneit Junction – previously marketed as Indian Junction – and says his vision is to create a “five-minute city” in Tarneit.
“Everything will be within walking distance,” he said.
“We will offer affordable housing in one or two-bedroom apartments and townhouses, with health facilities and restaurants.”
He said the junction site in Derrimut Road was also close to schools and shopping centres and would feature an Indian retirement village.
Responding to criticism about the name “Indian Junction”, Mr Kumar said it would be an inclusive community.
“Don’t think this is going to be only for Indians,” he said. “This is for everybody.”
The state government last year announced $500,000 to build an Indian Cultural Precinct in the western suburbs.
Free land
Mr Kumar said that if the state government and Wyndham council decided to build that at Tarneit Junction, he was prepared to give free land towards the project.
Wyndham council director of sustainability Dean Rochfort said the council and state government were in the process of finding $50,000 for a feasibility study into a precinct.
“[Mr Kumar’s] development is in a ‘pre-application phase’ and no formal application has been submitted,” he said.
State government spokesman Kosta Pandos said the government would undertake a feasibility study to determine the best location for an Indian precinct or community centre in Wyndham.
