Rebekah Sutton knows a thing or two about hammer throwing.
So much so that the 14-year-old Thomas Carr College student last week received an award from the mayor for her sporting achievements.
Starting with shot-put and discus seven years ago, Rebekah has been into hammer throwing for a couple of years now. She now spends every weeknight at Victoria University Athletics Track in Werribee in training.
“Training is a lot of fun, but can be intense sometimes,” she said. “It’s a really good environment. We all get along and see each other like brothers and sisters.”
Just last weekend, Rebekah placed second in the Victorian State Championships for hammer throwing, and has plans to compete in and get a place in the nationals later this year.
Rebekah said her recognition by the council was different to the usual sport awards.
“It feels pretty good to be recognised,” she said.
Looking to the future, Rebekah said even though physical education is her favourite subject at school – and she hopes to be a professional sportswoman – she also has plans to be a midwife or a paramedic.
Mayoral Youth Awards go to three people under the age of 25 from Wyndham every quarter, recognising their achievements and contributions to the community.
Mayor Henry Barlow said he was impressed by Rebekah’s achievements.
