Three Wyndham firefighters are taking the fight against motor neurone disease to new heights.

Werribee Fire Brigade firefighter Matt Mannix and Truganina firies Shane Bullen and James Jones will climb 1504 steps over 98 floors to the top of Sydney Tower Eye, the city’s tallest building, kitted out in their full firefighting gear.

Motor neurone disease is a neurodegenerative disease that causes weakness in muscles that progressively worsens and eventually leads to paralysis.

The firefighters, stair climb veterans, were inspired by the work of AFL legend and MND sufferer Neale Daniher, who has helped raise funds and awareness of the disease through his annual Big Freeze fundraisers.

The trio hopes to raise $3000 that will go to the Macquarie University MND research facility. Mr Jones is calling on the Wyndham community to get behind the cause.

“This challenge doesn’t compare to what people living with MND and their families live through every day,” he said.

“As a volunteer, our role is to serve our communities and this is just another way we can support those within our community who are affected by the disease.

“We’ll be training at different locations around Wyndham over the next few months to get us prepared for the epic climb.

“If you see us around, make sure you give us a wave or show your support with a donation to the Firefighters Climb for Motor Neurone Disease.”

The climb will be in October. To donate go to bit.ly/2L7J2iM
