No fireworks this festive season, fireys warn

Christmas and the new year may be behind us, but Werribee fire brigade is still warning residents against setting off illegal fireworks in the lead-up to Australia Day.

The brigade was kept busy over the festive season, responding to a fire sparked by fireworks, which burnt through a fence and into a farmer’s paddock.

First Lieutenant Darryl Wells said the brigade’s prompt attendance stopped the fire from becoming a serious blaze.

“With most of the local grasses now 100 per cent cured, fires can quickly spread and become quite large in a very short period of time,” he said.

Mr Wells also warned against any open fires at celebrations during the fire danger period (until April).

Gas and electric barbecues can be used outdoors, even on total fire ban days, but solid fuel is forbidden.
