There were shenanigans galore going on during Wyndham council election campaigns – and some of the stunts are coming back to haunt candidates.
Wyndham council has fined 18 council candidates for illegally displaying political signs on council land during their campaigns.
And the Local Government Investigations and Compliance Inspectorate received a dozen complaints about the Wyndham election.
Council’s city operations director Stephen Thorpe said $2800 of ratepayers’ money had been spent removing 77 illegally erected signs, three of which were picked up by their owners after they paid an impound fee.
The council would not reveal which council candidates had been fined, but Star Weekly is aware that re-elected councillors Intaj Khan and Heather Marcus were among those ordered to take signs down.
“During the recent election, Wyndham council actively patrolled the municipality to identify candidate signage that was erected illegally,” Mr Thorpe said.
“A total of 18 penalties, ranging from $40 to $110, were issued.”
Meanwhile, chief municipal inspector David Wolf confirmed the inspectorate had received 12 complaints regarding the Wyndham elections, but stressed that none of the complaints would affect the outcome.
“The majority of complaints related to misleading statements in or unauthorised use of electoral material,” Mr Wolf said.
