Extra services have been added to the Port Phillip ferry schedule one week after the alternative transport to the city was launched.

The 400-seat catamaran, the Wyndham Explorer, made its maiden voyage from Wyndham Harbour to Docklands starting at 6.40am on Monday, May 16, with a return trip at 5.40pm the same day.

Responding to feedback, the service has added a 4pm departure time from Wyndham Harbour for Monday to Friday.

People wanting to get to Wyndham Harbour from the Docklands will also be able to take advantage of a 10am departure on Mondays and Thursdays, and a 9am departure on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

More times have also been added to the weekend service.

Counting revealed that 164 passengers, paying $13 one way or $20 for a return trip, used the service between Monday and Friday last week.

The ferry received more attention over the weekend, with 181 passengers travelling between Wyndham Harbour and Docklands on Saturday and Sunday, and a further 1175 enjoying free “joy rides” on an open day.

Port Phillip Ferries operations director Murray Rance said it had been a slow but promising start to the trial, with positive feedback so far.

He said Port Phillip Ferries was committed to making the service a success.

Mr Rance said about 100 passengers would need to use the ferry daily to make it viable.

“What we want to do is continue to build that momentum,” he said.

“We’re not going to make any rash decisions based on one or two weeks.”
