Featherbrook P-9 College is set to get a whole lot greener.
The school’s prep to grade six pupils recently planted a host of pear and apple trees and other plants donated by Wyndham council, sustainability centre CERES and Spotless for National Tree Day.
This was followed up by the beginnings of the school’s own indigenous edible garden, with river mint, vanilla lily, chocolate lily and native raspberry being planted across six raised garden beds.
Principal Kerry Clayton said the fruit harvested from the trees will be used in food technology classes.
“Not only will they beautify our school, but it is also very important for the sustainability of our grounds,” Ms Clayton said.
“So many children think that you go and get your fruit and vegies from a supermarket, they have no idea how these things actually come about.
“It is incumbent upon us in education to support their knowledge around these things, and what better way to do it?”
