Werribee has lost long-time fire brigade stalwart Alan Kendall.
Brigade officers and members have expressed their sadness at the loss to cancer of the life member, who died last Friday after 47 years’ service.
Werribee Fire Brigade first lieutenant Darryl Wells said Mr Kendall had been an integral part of brigade life and would be sorely missed.
Last week, just days before his death, the brigade went on the road for its weekly roll call, with almost 50 CFA members visiting Mr Kendall’s home.
Mr Wells said Mr Kendall had indicated he wanted to attend a roll call but was too unwell.
“Because Alan wasn’t able to make it to the station, we decided we would go to his house and do what we do in his court,” Mr Wells said.
“It was a really moving experience. Alan sat there in his wheelchair watching.
“When his name was called out during roll call, it was as if he was at the station.
“He has contributed a great deal to our brigade, contributing to us being known around Victoria as a very competent and respected brigade.
“Every member knows and respects Alan for all he has done for us.”
Mr Kendall was presented with his service helmet and a plaque recognising and thanking him for his many years of service.
His funeral service will be held from 1pm on Thursday, November 19, at Werribee fire station. It will be open to family, friends and the public.
CFA members are asked to wear full uniform as a mark of respect.
