Fake tradies warning

Police have issued a warning about “fake tradies” operating in the west.

The Wyndham, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong police Eyewatch Facebook pages all posted the warning earlier this month.

“Fake tradies, also known as travelling conmen, are dishonest tradesmen who prey upon unsuspecting customers and disappear with their money after doing substandard work or not doing the work at all,” the post said.

“Fake tradies appear more frequently during warmer weather and natural disasters or emergencies – such as the evolving coronavirus (COVID-19) situation, when vulnerable people may need assistance.”

The post said fake tradespeople might approach people working in their garden, or they might doorknock houses.

“They look for houses that have handrails and ramps, often targeting older Victorians and vulnerable people,” the warning said

“They ask for cash before starting the work and will offer to drive you to an ATM.

“They move quickly and usually only give a first name and mobile number – so contacting them afterwards is difficult.”

If you know fake tradies are operating in your area, gather as much information as you can, such as their name and car registration and report them to the travelling conmen hotline on 1300 133 408 and call police.
