Exclusive: Sneak peak at new Werribee hospital

This is your sneak peak at Werribee’s new multimillion-dollar, state-of-the-art private hospital.

Set on Hoppers Lane next to Wyndham Private Medical Centre, and across the road from Werribee Mercy Hospital, the hospital will create 350 full-time jobs on completion and hundreds more contract positions during its design and construction, with work on the 112-bed hospital due to begin later this year.

The hospital is expected to open mid-2017 and will be fitted out with six operating theatres, four delivery suites, five cots in its special-care nursery, a cardiac catheter laboratory, day procedure unit, day oncology, rehabilitation facilities, consulting suites, and radiology and pathology departments.

An 80-bed aged-care facility catering for respite-care needs, residents who are financially disadvantaged and those suffering dementia will also be built on-site.

St Vincent’s Private Melbourne chief executive Ian Grisold said the hospital also had plans in hand for future expansion. He said the hospital would work hand-in-hand with Werribee Mercy Hospital to address local healthcare challenges for one of Australia’s fastest-growing populations, especially where there was unmet demand.

About 4800 Wyndham residents were treated at St Vincent’s Private Hospital in Melbourne during the 2014-15 financial year.

Data showing 4043 births recorded in Wyndham during the same 12 months also reveals one in three women had their babies at hospitals outside the city.

Oncologist Ross Jennens said the new hospital would bring additional medical professionals to the community’s doorstep.

“I see a lot of patients from the west who travel into town for chemotherapy treatments or other medical procedures,” he said.

“The extra time that’s involved commuting to appointments can really add unnecessary stress and burden to patients and their families,” Dr Jennens said.

The hospital recently launched a Health of the West Capital campaign to raise $10 million to equip it with the latest medical technology.
