Residents are being urged to reach out and meet their neighbours as part of community safety month in Wyndham.
Wyndham City’s safer communities portfolio holder Cr Kim McAliney said: “Studies have shown that stronger, closer communities is a very effective tool when it comes to crime prevention”.
“While you’re likely to make some new friends, it’s also a great way to keep your neighbourhood safe.”
There will be a number of activities running over October promoting community safety.
Community consultation will also be held throughout this month at Kelly Park in Werribee to discuss how to make that space safer. Wyndham Vale Community Learning Centre will also be running sessions on how to stay safe on the internet.
Meanwhile, Wyndham and Melton councils have received the 2017 Resilient Australia Award for their Emergency Ready Communities project.
Cr McAliney last week accepted the award on behalf of the council. The project prepares the community in the event of an emergency. Cr McAliney said the project began in 2015 and has established a co-ordinated effort for the two cities.
“We are proud to be leaders in Victoria, with our counterparts in Melton, when it comes to emergency and disaster management,” she said.
