Prizes and publication are on offer for emerging writers across Victoria in this year’s Wyndham writing awards.
Entries for the awards are now open to aspiring adult writers, with $3600 in prizes and publication in the Wyndham Writing Awards Anthology up for grabs.
Short stories between 1500 and 3000 words, poetry with a maximum of 60 lines and flash stories between 100 and 600 words are the award’s three categories, with all to be judged by true crime author Vickie Petraitis.
Cash prizes will be awarded to first and second getters in each category, while all shortlisted entries will be published in the anthology.
Wyndham councillor Jasmine Hill said the awards provide the ideal stepping stone to a literary career.
“We have some very creative emerging writers in our city and others whose talents are yet to be recognised.
These awards offer a chance for novice and unseasoned writers to challenge themselves and blossom and flourish,” Cr Hill said.
To help prospective entrants prepare, Wyndham libraries are offering a series of free workshops, starting with a poetry session run by Dr Chris Ringrose at the Julia Gilliard Library Tarneit on Saturday May 20 from 10.30am to 12.30pm.
Western suburbs author Amra Pajalic will then conduct an online writing for competition workshop from 6 to 8pm on Monday May 22.
Free online writing workshops are also held on every fourth Tuesday of the month from 7.30 to 8.30pm.
Bookings are essential.
Entries for the Wyndham writing awards close on June 30 and can be made at: www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/writingawards
