These young gardeners know a thing or two about growing perfect fruit and vegetables.

The Point Cook P-9 College students were ecstatic to learn their efforts working the land had won the school the state’s best edible garden award.

The school received its $1000 prize at the recent Victorian School Garden Awards, which were held at the Botanic Gardens.

The bounty will go towards plants and supplies for the school’s kitchen garden.

The garden is mostly tended by the school’s grade 3 and 4 pupils as part of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program, which teaches children how to grow and harvest vegetables, fruit and herbs.

The school also has hens, which present another learning experience for the youngsters.

Pupils use the produce they grow to prepare, cook, then eat meals prepared with the school’s food technology teacher, promoting healthy eating habits and knowledge of the natural world from a young age.

Gardening teacher Sarah Moore said the school grew diverse seasonal fruit and vegetables, including tomatoes, zucchinis, cucumbers, capsicum, corn and pumpkins.
