When you’re a CFA volunteer, you’re never really off duty.

Werribee CFA volunteers Emily Martignago and Lino Zulian learnt that lesson first-hand recently when the duo was called on to administer first-aid to a woman suffering an allergic reaction while they were out for dinner.

The pair were at a Werribee Lions Club dinner and about to accept a $3000 donation when a patron suffered a potentially life-threatening anaphylactic reaction to her food.

Ms Martignago and Mr Zulian helped the woman administer her medication and put her health plan in action.

They were able to keep her calm, monitoring her vital signs while waiting for an ambulance.

The woman was subsequently rushed to hospital, and later discharged.

Ms Martignago, who joined the brigade four years ago, said her training had kicked in immediately.

“The lady had a good anaphylaxis plan … so it went quite smoothly,” she said.

Mr Zulian has been a volunteer for almost 30 years and is part of the brigade’s rescue team.

Werribee Lions president Kerry Cook said the club is proud to support Werribee CFA and donate to its ongoing efforts.

“It was fantastic to have the calming and experienced presence of Lino and Emily there,” Ms Cook said.

“We were sorry that Lino and Emily had to work for their dinner, but very grateful they were there.”

Werribee CFA captain Michael Wells said the incident highlighted the benefits of having trained volunteers active in communities.
