A 24-day police operation targeting drivers breaking the law during the festive season resulted in more than 1000 drivers being nabbed on Wyndham roads.
There were 192 drivers caught speeding during Operation Roadwise, which wrapped up on January 8. Sixty-four were busted using their mobile phones while driving, 159 were caught behind the wheels of unregistered vehicles and 22 were driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
As well, 164 seatbelt offences were committed and 142 drivers were found to be driving without a licence or with a disqualified one.
Acting Senior Sergeant Tim Jacobs, of westgate highway patrol, said there had been a significant police presence during the operation on roads across the division, which takes in Wyndham, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong.
“Alcohol, drugs, speed, fatigue and distraction – unfortunately police saw far too many risks every day in the 24-day operation,” he said. “With the beginning of a new year, it was timely for everyone to reflect on how they could play a role in reducing road trauma.”
He said even though Roadwise has finished, police would continue to be out and about.
“[We’ll be] focussing on seeing road users arrive safely home to their families and friends,” he said.
