Driver killed in Tarneit crash that destroyed childcare centre

A man has died in a bizarre car crash which destroyed a childcare centre after failing to stop for police during an early-morning intercept in Tarneit.

Police attempted to pull over the vehicle about 4am on Tarneit Road but as they activated their lights, saw a flash inside the car.

The car then crossed three lanes of traffic, veering off the road and and crashing into childcare centre Kool Kidz at high speed, causing the building to catch fire.

The driver of the vehicle managed to get out of his car but only got a short distance from the blaze and died.

Police attempted to rescue the man but were driven back by the fire which has destroyed the business.

The incident will now be investigated by major collision detectives and Professional Standards Command.

Officers have maintained they were not pursuing the vehicle when it speed off and crashed into the building.

Firefighters battled for several hours to bring the blaze under control with aerial appliances but the building continues to smoulder.

Tarneit Road is expected to be closed for most of the day and motorists are being told to avoid the area.
