Drink fountain petition laps up support

More than 320 people have signed an online petition calling for a water fountain to be installed at an enclosed dog park in Truganina.

The petition, which was started by resident Aaron Bryan about a fortnight ago, is asking for Wyndham council to put a water fountain inside the dog park on Forsyth Road and Perennial Drive.

The Change.org petition states: “Dogs are incredibly active animals and require high levels of hydration during rigorous exercise whilst visiting the park.

“However for some reason, the park was not equipped with a hydration station which can service upwards of 15 plus dogs that use the park at any one time.

“Currently, dog owners are tasked with the tedious job of physically exiting the park to fill a large plastic bottle at another water fountain located within the children’s playground area, and then return to the park with a heavy bottle of water.

“A small metal bowl located inside the park can then be filled manually for the animals to ensure they have water.

“It is unknown who supplied the bottle and bowl but this solution can only ever be a temporary measure given the lack of hydration infrastructure and high demand for water.”

Wyndham council city operations director Stephen Thorpe said the council was investigating whether there were water connections on-site at the dog park in order to install a water fountain.

“We are also currently reviewing our Open Space Strategy, which includes off-leash dog areas across the municipality,” Mr Thorpe said.

“The review will include assessment of the need for dog drink fountains in the design of all future off-leash areas as well as the retro-fit of any existing dog off-leash areas with fountains where possible.”
