Wyndham police strike against burglars

More than 75 arrests have been made by Wyndham police’s burglary crew since September.

Detective Sergeant Mark Sagona said the unit was receiving an average of 105 reports of house burglaries a month, but advances in forensics procedures and “good old fashioned police work” had led to the arrests of many repeat offenders.

“We’ve put in a lot of hard work over the past few months so it’s great to have some really good results,” he said.

“As with many regions across the state, recidivist offenders often drive up our numbers when it comes to residential burglaries, so to get a few off the street is a big win for our team and indeed the Wyndham community.

“But there are still a lot of extra steps members of the public can take to ensure they’re doing all they can to drive down the numbers and the likelihood of their houses being broken into.”

The arrest tally comes as Williams Landing was ranked by one survey as the suburb most likely to be burgled across Victoria. Crime data released by RACV found one in every 19 households there was burgled during 2014-15, more than three times the state average of one in 67.

Victoria Police has urged home owners to secure gates with quality padlocks, use surveillance cameras, secure windows and lock doors at all times.
