When nine-year-old Mia Olsen decided she needed a haircut, she knew she wanted her long brown tresses to be donated to a worthy charity.
The Tarneit resident then had the idea to raise money for the cancer council.
Mia’s mum Amanda, said her daughter came up with the suggestion all on her own.
“She wants to help people with cancer and for her hair to be donated into a wig,” she said.
“Not [to] get a cut and be swept away for nothing into the bin, she wanted it to go to a good cause.”
Ms Olsen said she was “really proud” of the decision her “very caring girl” made.
“She was a bit worried about how she’s gonna look, cause she hasn’t had short hair for a very long time, since she was three years old, she was like ‘am I gonna like it?’,” she said.
“She had lots of support, even a teacher at school donated.:
Ms Olsen said people in the community could donate to the cause, but also choose to cut their own hair as well.
“If you see all the hair that’s going into the bin, it can be made into a wig and help others,” she said.
“It’d be great if there was more local salons that do it, because i had to travel to Melton to get it done, and the next closest was in Altona…and more people that do it.”
