Dogs unleashed at Campbell’s Cove

Campbell’s Cove was once a beach where clothing was optional … now it’s one where dogs can shed their constraints.

A section of the Werribee South beach – from the eastern edge of the car park at the end of the boat sheds, to the boundary fence of the Point Cook RAAF base – has been deemed an off-lead area where dogs can play and swim.

Council’s environment and sustainability portfolio holder Cr Heather Marcus said it was important dog owners followed the rules.

Cr Marcus has reminded dog owners that if they’re caught with their dog off its lead in an area where it’s not allowed, they face fines of up to $228.

“This helps to protect other dogs and members of the public,” Cr Marcus said.

“Even if you are in an off-lead area, you are still required to have effective control of your dog.

“It is also important to remember to clean up after your pets, if they go to the toilet while you’re out and about.”

The beach was an “optional clothing” beach until July 2015, when state planning minister Richard Wynne decided to remove its status.

At the time, he said the beach was isolated when it was first developed in 1968, but is now busy and crowded.
