Derrimut Road traffic light woes exposed

A lower speed limit, green lights that change too quickly and poor traffic light sequencing are among the top bugbears for Wyndham drivers using Derrimut Road.

Last year, VicRoads called on drivers to share their travel experiences on the 1.5 kilometre stretch of Derrimut Road between Railway Avenue and Pacific Werribee as part of its annual traffic light routes review.

Many complained there were too many sets of lights along that stretch of road, with their sequencing, especially around Pacific Werribee, compounding congestion.

“Quite often at these sets of lights, you’ll not be able to move through a green light due to the traffic at the light ahead being so backed up,” one person commented.

A couple of people also lamented the speed reduction from 70km/h to 60km/h, with one saying: “I think these reductions have actually caused more congestion than they solved”.

Turning in and out of Railway Avenue from Derrimut Road was also a key issue, with respondents citing long queues.

About 26,000 cars use Derrimut Road every day.

VicRoads Metro North West acting regional director Scott Lawrence said the traffic light review aimed to improve traffic flow and cut travel times and queues at key intersections.
