Derrimut Road lights go under the microscope

Sick of seeing red every time you drive along Derrimut Road?

VicRoads is calling on drivers to share their travel experiences on the 1.5 kilometre stretch of Derrimut Road between Railway Avenue and Pacific Werribee as part of its annual traffic light route review.

Derrimut Road is one of eight roads in the state selected to be reviewed.

VicRoads’ journey services director Sameem Moslih said this year’s review would consider traffic volumes, competing demands from different forms of transport, and travel times between different traffic lights.

Derrimut Road was chosen for the review due to its traffic volumes as well as feedback from the community.

“We know how frustrating it is to be stuck in traffic, which is why each year VicRoads looks at improving traffic light sequences,” Mr Moslih said.

“Victorians rely on these roads every day, so it is important that we consider their experiences when we conduct route reviews.

“Melbourne’s population is growing by 2000 people per week. The answer to congestion isn’t just about building new roads – it’s about looking for ways to use the road network more effectively.”

The results of the review will be available early next year.

The review coincides with the development of a new VicRoads app which will allow vehicles to pass through consecutive waves of green lights.

Mr Moslih said VicRoads is working with Intelematics on the hands-free smart phone app, which will give drivers messages about traffic along their routes via GPS.

The app is currently undergoing an 18-month trial.

“We’re taking a smart approach to managing traffic and giving drivers the ability to make informed and practical decisions about their journey.”
