The first ever senior Point Cook soccer derby will be a big occasion, but the cup on offer will mean a whole lot more than simple bragging rights for the wider Wyndham community.
The Point Cook derby between the Point Cook Jets and West Point, will be raising money for the Wyndham Health Foundation (WHF) with the winning side to claim a cup
WHF general manager Christine Thornton said the idea of the cup was well received by both clubs, which play in the FV state league 4 west competition.
She said that team sport was a great platform for getting people keen about their own health.
“We think it’s extremely important that you don’t need to be going to the gym for hours, you can be out in the community playing a sport you love,” she said.
“I have seen first hand people re-join their soccer clubs and improve their physical and mental health as well.”
Raffles tickets, meat trays and plenty of Western United merchandise will be on sale at the game and money raised going towards the WHF’s goal of raising $85,000 towards a new respiratory machine that detects pulmonary issues for Werribee Mercy Hospital.
While the derby will excite and raise money for the foundation, it is also serving as a lead up to the Wyndham Health Festival in June.
The soccer match kicks off at 8.30pm on Friday, May 16 at Saltwater Reserve.
