Calls for traffic lights or a roundabout to be installed at the “dangerous” Point Cook and Sneydes Road intersection are rising, amid fears of a serious collision at the site.
Cr Kim McAliney said the council had been lobbying hard for the Point Cook intersection – which comes under VicRoads jurisdiction – to be upgraded.
“Someone is going to be killed there if nothing is done, there is no doubt about it,” she said.
“I call it Russian roulette – it really is. You take your own life in your hands driving through there and for children crossing the road, too.”
The council has included a request for the intersection to be upgraded in its submission on the state government’s 2019-20 budget.
Point Cook Action Group president Bob Fairclough said the group had been lobbying for traffic lights to be installed at the intersection for a number of years.
Wyndham police Inspector Adrian Healy said that in the past five years, there had been five collisions reported within a kilometre of the intersection, three involving injuries.
“We have heard it can be difficult to turn right from Sneydes Road into Point Cook Road because of the volume of traffic travelling along Point Cook Road itself, so we are making inquiries with VicRoads to see what their plan is with this issue,” he said.
On the Star Weekly Facebook page, several Wyndham residents said they avoided turning right at the intersection, which they described as the “worst intersection ever”, “a fatality waiting to happen” and “the most dangerous one I have ever encountered”.
Julie Ann wrote: “I go through this intersection ever Friday and many times there are near misses or an accident”.
VicRoads manager of movement and safety, metro north-west, Jason Stakic, said the organisation was “working closely with Wyndham City Council on a number of potential road safety improvements for the Point Cook Road corridor”.
