An organisation which provides youth counselling and support has been presented with a donation of $5000, which was raised at last year’s Avalon Dance Stars on the Floor.

Event organiser Heather Marcus presented a cheque to headspace Werribee last week.

The Avalon Dance Stars on the Floor committee and Mental Health Foundation Australia (MHFA) joined together for the show, which eight prominent Wyndham residents participated in.

The “dance stars” all raised funds for youth mental health support and suicide prevention in Wyndham, in addition to performing at the gala event.

They were trained by Dance Worx in Essendon, with the assistance of balloon dancing teachers Kym and Shane Hocking.

Ms Marcus, who is also a multicultural ambassador for the MHFA, said the dance event raised almost $41,000.

Apart from headspace Werribee, the funds raised have also been donated to programs run by mental health groups in Wyndham, at Iramoo Community Centre and by the Catholic Church.

“If we could help save a couple of young lives, it’s all worth it,” Ms Marcus said.

Ms Marcus said that she is passionate about youth suicide prevention because her sister committed suicide at the age of 23.
