Dad’s challenge to give back

When young Alex Miller was battling a rare and incurable tumour in the middle of her brain stem, her family was offered relief by the kids cancer charity Challenge.

Alex’s father, Andrew, said Challenge provided the family with a lot of support throughout the two-year battle leading up to Alex’s death in September. She was six.

Now he is preparing to give back.

“They helped us out heaps,” he said. “They sent the kids to concerts, my wife to health and massage retreats, me on a fishing trip, and a trip to Torquay.

“They really helped take the pressure off.”

Mr Miller, who lives in Wyndhamvale, said he missed Alex terribly but knew nothing would bring her back.

“Some days are harder than others, it just hits you,”he said. “But I know I can’t just fall into a heap and grieve … I have to do something to help, something to make it easier for other families going through what we did.”

Mr Miller will take to his dirt bike next month and participate in the Finke Desert Race in Alice Springs to raise funds for Challenge.

“We’ve always loved dirt bikes and quadbikes,” he said. “Alex had her own little quaddie, so I’m doing this in her honour while raising money for the charity that helped us.”

The race, over 452 kilometres, will be held from June 10 to June 13.
