Ever fancied a cuppa with a cop?

Wyndham Police is trialling one-hour monthly Coffee with a Cop sessions throughout Wyndham, where locals can drop in and share their safety concerns with officers in an informal setting.

A number of police were on hand for a hot drink and a chat last Tuesday, when about 20 locals dropped in.

The Coffee with a Cop concept, which is billed as a simple yet effective approach to community engagement, has been a huge success in the US, Canada and New South Wales.

Acting Inspector Peter Bitton said the morning was a great success, with police staying an extra half-hour to chat with everyone who showed up.

“It was a great opportunity for police to share with residents what policing activities we have going on in the area and what our priorities are,” Acting Inspector Bitton said.

“It also gave residents an opportunity to speak about general concerns they have around crime and other public-order issues.

“Residents brought up a number of topics, including concerns regarding wayward youth congregating in public areas, and also sought advice about personal safety and security of their homes.

“As we had road policing specialists in attendance, people were able to clarify some issues around traffic enforcement.”

Dates for future Coffee with a Cop sessions will be posted on the Wyndham Police Eyewatch Facebook page.
