Cup unites Tibetan community

A soccer and basketball tournament dedicated to empowering women will be held in Wyndham over the Easter long weekend.

The Tibetan Unity Cup aims to provide an opportunity for young Tibetans to come together to play sport, build self-esteem and social networks.

The basketball portion of the tournament will be held at Eagle Stadium while the soccer competition will be held at The Grange

Eagle Stadium general manager Rod Gaut said the event is recognised as the premier Tibetan sporting event in Australia.

He said this year, the unity cup will be dedicated to women’s empowerment.

“It is anticipated the 2023 Unity Cup will involve over 100 Tibetan young people from ages 16 to 35 from NSW, Queensland, Victoria, and Canberra and attract many spectators from the Victorian Tibetan community,” Mr Gaut said.

“A highlight of the event will be the participation of the Tibetan Community of Australia’s Soccer Team before the team leaves for India to participate in the prestigious Gyalyum Chenmo Memorial Gold Cup.

“Hosting the Tibetan Unity Cup is not just about organising a sports event, it is about celebrating diversity and bringing people together.”

The Tibetan Unity Cup is on Friday, April 7 – Monday, April 10.
