Sandra Carnovale isn’t completely sure, but if she had to estimate how many squares she and other members of the Wyndham Life Activities Club, crocheted for their Christmas tree she’d guess it was more than 2000.

Plans to make the tree began in February, when a club member saw a similar tree on Facebook and raised the idea with the rest of the group.

“It was probably from April that we all started sitting down and crocheting squares, we had lots of donations of wool,“ Ms Carnovale.

Each delicate square took twenty minutes to crochet, but Ms Carnovale said the months spent together strengthened the group’s friendship and led to many laughs.

“It was just a wonderful culmination of a great effort from lots of people, from everyone in general, the reception and the reaction has just been amazing,“ she said.

The tree is displayed at the Italian Sports Club of Werribee, and Ms Carnovale hopes residents make an effort to see their hard work.

“More than anything we wanted to do something that was a community effort and hopefully people would be inspired by it, and say ’gee, look at that, that’s great’,“ she said.

Ms Carnovale said the group also participates in line dancing, a bookclub, a meet and eat lunch group and a seniors exercise class, anybody who wants to join can contact the Italian Sports Club of Werribee.
