Crime rates continue to decline

The number of crimes in Wyndham decreased by 4.8 per cent over the 12 months to the end of March 2022, compared to the previous 12 months according to the Crime Statistics Agency.

Wyndham recorded 12 094 criminal incidence, down from 12,706.

Crime decreased in Werribee (3166 incidents), Tarneit (1872 incidents) and Point Cook (1689) but in Hoppers Crossing the number of reports increased from 1984 to 2027, and in Truganina incidents also rose from 999 to 1040.

Houses were the most common crime location, with the number of reported cases increasing by 6 per cent from 4378 incidents in 2021, to 4668 this year.

The most common crime was theft from motor vehicles, followed by other theft, criminal damage, breaches of family violence worders and common assault.

Inspector Darren Bentley said the decline in criminal offences was a “great result” for the municipality .

“Obviously we’re working hard to continue to drive down crime in Wyndham,” he said.

“We’ve currently got a number of operations and programs in place, working with the council and community to continue to drive crime down.”

Inspector Bentley said the community engagement team was “continually focused” on addressing any emerging issues.

“Wherever we look and see that there’s a slight increase in crime, we put more resources and more attention in relation to reduction in those areas,” he said.

“We’re consistently monitoring through our processes.”

Inspector Bentley said there were steps people could take to stay safe.

“We really encourage people to be mindful of locking their cars, locking their houses, making sure that you report any suspicious activity,“ he said.

“If they see police down the street, or at the shopping centres…make sure that they engage with the police.

“We’re actually interested to talk to the community and listen to what their concerns and what their local safety issues are and how we can work with them to address them,“ he said.
