Crackdown on illegal dumping

Litterbugs, beware – Wyndham council is cracking down on illegal dumping.

A Hoppers Crossing business has been slapped with a $5000 fine after being caught dumping used car tyres on vacant land in Point Cook – the second time in two years the business has been fined for dumping rubbish.

Meanwhile, a couple found to be dumping rubbish from their car in a laneway behind businesses in Vincent Crescent, Werribee, have been fined $225 each.

Wyndham councillor and environment and sustainability portfolio holder Peter Gibbons said the couple could have taken a car load of rubbish to the Werribee tip for $28.50.

“The risk is simply not worth any possible reward,” he said.

Wyndham chief executive Kelly Grigsby said the council had received 1614 complaints relating to litter and illegal dumping so far this year. Last calendar year, a total 2009 complaints were made about the same issue.

“As part of council’s new waste and litter strategy, we are aiming to see an increase in the number of community litter reports by 25 per cent by 2020, as this is a vital tool in keeping Wyndham clean,” she said.

“We are also strengthening our reporting of littering by monitoring hotspots with the aim to see a 25 per cent reduction in these areas by 2020.”
