Council wins two awards

Wyndham council has received awards for several of its environmental and transport initiatives.

At the Tuesday 25 November council meeting, mayor Josh Gilligan announced the Habitat Heroes program had cleaned up at the Keep Australia Beautiful awards.

The program, which helps teach residents and groups about protecting local biodiversity as well as providing free plants, received the tidy towns and cities sustainability award in the behaviour change campaigns and education category.

In its 10th year, the program has helped plant more than 550 residential gardens with native flora, worked with 25 schools and led to a total of 27,000 plants being planted.

Council also received an honourable mention for the land protection grant scheme in the environment category.

The Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE-ANZ) also recognised the municipality with their sustainable transport award for its efforts in its commitment to creating safer, healthier and more sustainable transport choices for its residents.

ITE-ANZ is a community of transport professionals across Australia and New Zealand dedicated to improving mobility and safety for all transport users.

The Active Travel to Schools Program, which helps supply students with the means to travel to school without a vehicle, was listed as one of the reasons for council winning the honour.

The Missing Links Program, an initiative to connect fragmented paths and roads to create a continuous network for active transport, such as walking and cycling, was also part of the council’s winning case.
