Council makes committee appointments

All of Wyndham council’s committees have been appointed for 2025-26, but not everyone is happy about the decisions.

At the 25 November council meeting, councillors agreed upon their delegations for the year ahead.

Fronting the audit and risk committee will be mayor of the day Josh Gilligan, and councillors Susan McIntyre and Shannon McGuire.

Cr Gilligan will also be tasked with overseeing the chief executive performance and remuneration committee.

Supporting him will be councillors Mia Shaw, Maria King, Preet Singh and Larry Zhao.

Crs King, Shaw and Singh will handle the waste management community group.

Cr Jasmine Hill said she was disappointed not to have received an appointment of any of the committees for the year ahead.

“I note that despite five years of committee experience and consistent contribution as a councillor …I want to put on record that I have been left off all committees this year,” Cr Hill said.

“I had expressed my willingness to continue contributing.

“I feel that being excluded entirely is disappointing but I want to reassure our residents that committees are not the only place where work happens.

“Community service does not depend on appointments and my advocacy will not be diminished by internal dynamics.”

Cr Peter Maynard said he did not recall receiving an email from Cr Shaw regarding committee nominations, but was only informed of who would be on each committee through an email from the mayor that morning.

“As per process, councillors did not receive an email via your office to see who wanted to nominate for those committees,” Cr Maynard said.

Cr Shaw addressed Cr Hill and Cr Maynard’s comments in her right of reply.

“Thank you for Cr Hill and Cr Maynard’s comments– I also stand for good governance, integrity and transparency as well– so I thought it would be good to put that on the record,” Cr Shaw said.

Other key delegations included Cr Jennie Barrera’s appointment to the Reconciliation Advisory Committee and to the local government mayoral taskforce supporting people seeking asylum.

As well as Cr Robert Szatkowski returning to the Association of Bayside Municipalities.

The appointments were approved nine votes to two, with Cr Hill and Cr Maynard voting against the delegations.
